Empowerment
Grief is not the end of the story
When a woman loses her husband, she often loses far more than a partner. In many communities she can lose her home, her income, her standing — sometimes even custody of her children. Widowhood remains one of the most overlooked drivers of poverty and discrimination affecting women today. At JOMAR Foundation we refuse to accept that a widow’s story should end in hardship. We believe it can begin again.

Here are five women whose courage — matched with the right support — turned profound loss into livelihood and leadership. Their names have been changed to protect their privacy, but their journeys are real.
From loss to livelihood
Amara was left with three children and no income when her husband passed. Through our skills acquisition program she trained as a tailor and received a small start-up grant. Today she runs her own shop, employs two apprentices and keeps all three children in school. Ngozi joined a savings and entrepreneurship group, learned to manage a budget, and now sells produce at scale across two markets.

Fatima rebuilt her confidence through counselling and mentorship before launching a catering business. Adaeze used vocational training in soap-making to start a cooperative with other widows in her community. And Grace, once unable to afford her children’s school fees, now mentors newly widowed women — passing on the very support that lifted her.
What made the difference
None of these transformations happened by accident. Each woman received a combination of emotional support, practical skills, a modest financial boost and a community that believed in her. That is the model JOMAR Foundation is built on: we do not hand out short-term relief and walk away. We walk with each woman until she is standing firmly on her own.

Economic empowerment also protects the next generation. When a widow earns a stable income, her daughters stay in school and her sons grow up seeing women as capable leaders. Dignity, once restored, becomes contagious.
